Running Gear I Actually Like

I keep gear pretty minimal. The goal is to remove friction so you can run more consistently (and avoid dumb problems like blisters, chafing, and being invisible to cars).
Quick picks (if you want the short list)
- Socks: thin merino or synthetic (no cotton)
- Rain: brimmed hat + anti-chafe + “runner-style” ventilated jacket
- Safety: reflective vest + small light
- Comfort: Body Glide / Vaseline for predictable chafe zones
Shoes
Shoes are personal, but here are the features that matter most (especially in wet or sloppy conditions):
- Fit first: plenty of toe room, locked-in heel
- Drainage & breathable upper (water will get in—let it get out)
- Grip: if it’s rainy, consider a trail-style outsole even on roads
Socks
Socks are underrated. They’re the difference between “fine” and “why are my feet on fire.”
- Best materials: merino wool blends or synthetic performance socks
- Avoid: cotton (it holds water and stays wet)
- Thickness: thinner usually works better in rain and dries faster
Rain running
If you run in the rain, focus on three things: chafe, visibility, and keeping water out of your eyes.
- Hat with a brim to keep rain off your face
- Anti-chafe on seams, toes, and anywhere you know will rub
- Reflective gear even during the day (drivers see less in rain)
- Skip “waterproof shoes”—they tend to trap water inside
Safety essentials
- Reflective vest (simple & effective)
- Small light (handheld or chest light)
- ID (tag, card, or running belt)
Carry basics
- Running belt / waist pack for keys, ID, gels
- Hydration (bottle, vest, or handheld depending on distance)
- Headphones (if you use them, keep volume low + stay aware)
